Announcer: Time to wrap things up for this week's program but before we go we thought we'd show you how Clark Kent lost his trademark glasses. Former Laker player and Coach Kurt Rambis went under the laser and corrected his vision last week. Here's a look:
At the top of his game they called him Superman. The athleticism, the aggressiveness, the intensity, and of course those Clark Kent glasses. But last week Kurt Rambis bid adieu to the specs and said hello to the Caster Eye Center, where he underwent LASIK eye surgery.
Kurt Rambis: I've been wanting to do this for several years now. The LASIK surgery has progressed to the point where I feel comfortable doing it; it's a little nerve racking, but I've spent the last 4 years just working up the nerve to come in here.
Announcer: Although choosing to correct his sight comes at the risk of loosing his distinctive trademark, Kurt's not worried about disappointing his fans.
Rambis: I would hope my trademark was my heart and had nothing to do with my glasses. I played hard. I know my glasses gave me certain distinction from other people, but I played with my heart not my glasses. I only needed them to see.
Announcer: LASIK surgery, also known as the flap and zap procedure, benefits those who need glasses or contacts to see far away. And can clear up anyone's blurry world.
Dr. Caster: The LASIK procedure takes about 5 minutes and there is no pain involved. We don't need to give any shots or anything like that; we just put drops in the eye. And we give a pill to help the patient relax before the procedure. We then bring them into the laser room and ask them to lie underneath the laser.
Medical Assistant: O.K. Lie in the chair. Here's you're Pooh Bear.
Rambis: No Tigger?
Medical Assistant: *giggle
Dr. Caster: Then we do the procedure. Which involves shining the laser light onto the eye. And it changes the curvature of the eye so the eye can focus the way we like it to focus. And then we put drops in the eye as soon as we're finished. The patients sit up and immediately they can see.
Rambis: Its amazing, I can see, I can see better already. You are the man. ("high fives" Dr.Caster) I'm telling you, you are the man! That is unbelievable. That is absolutely unbelievable.
Announcer: So with the surgery a success, Kurt will no longer need those old specs.
Rambis: These ugly things: I no longer need. They are going in the Caster Eye Center wastebasket. And that's where they are gonna stay.
Announcer: Well, we wish you the best of luck with your new sight, Kurt. I guess now that big "S" on your shirt is gone and the cape as well. Oh'boy, well that will wrap up this week's show. We hope you will join us next time on This Week on Southern California Sports. We are gonna be talking tennis next week. We're gonna be down in Manhattan Beach. Until next time, I'm Tom Kelly. Thanks for looking in.
